A new Samsung smartphone SM-G390F has received WiFi certification from the WiFi Alliance (WFA). The listing unhides that the device, which carries a model number of SM-G390F, runs Android Nougat out of the box. I may be Galaxy Xcover 4.
As for the device, going by the model number it carries, it might be the successor to the entry-level Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 from 2015, which launched with SM-G388F model number.
There is currently no information about when the Galaxy Xcover 4 will be released and what price tag will be, although given that it has started collecting necessary certifications, we expect to hear more about the device sooner rather than later.
Wi-Fi Alliance is a non-profit organization that promotes Wi-Fi technology and certifies Wi-Fi products if they conform to certain standards of interoperability.
While all 802.11a/b/g products are called Wi-Fi, only products that have passed the Wi-Fi Alliance testing are allowed to refer to their products as “Wi-Fi Certified”.
The Alliance also certifies products that comply with its specifications for Wi-Fi interoperability, security and application-specific protocols. However, certification is not mandatory and absence of the Wi-Fi Alliance Certified logo does not imply a lack of compatibility.
The Wi-Fi Alliance was founded in 1999 as the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA). Original members include 3Com, Aironet, which has since been acquired by Cisco, Harris Semiconductor, which is now Intersil, Lucent, which is now Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia and Symbol Technologies, which is now Motorola. The Alliance lists as key sponsors Apple inc., Comcast, Samsung, Sony, LG, Intel, Dell, Broadcom, Cisco, Qualcomm, Motorola, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, and T-Mobile.
By the help of a marketing company called Interbrand, the organization renamed the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.11b Direct Sequence standard Wi-Fi. WECA changed its name to the Wi-Fi Alliance in 2002. The organization’s headquarters are in Austin, Texas.
