बॉलीवुड की नम्बर वन आइटम गर्ल कही जाने वाली हेलन का आज जन्मदिन है। आज हेलन की उम्र ७९वर्ष है। हेलन को आखिरी बार वर्ष २००० में रिलीज हुई फिल्म “मोहब्बतें” में देखा गया था। उन्हें लाइम लाइट से दूर हुए लगभग १७ साल बीत गए हैं। वह यदा कदा अपने परिवार के साथ किसी फंक्शन में नजर आ जाती हैं।
भारतीय सिनेमा में आइटम सॉन्ग की शुरुआत करने का श्रेय हेलन को जाता है। एंग्लो इंडियन हेलन जब तक फिल्मों में रहीं, उनका स्टारडम बिलकुल कम नहीं हुआ। अपने डांस से हेलेन ने दर्शकों को खूब लुभाया था। आज उनके जन्मदिन के मौके पर हम आपको उनकी निजी जिंदगी की ऐसी असलियत बताएंगे जहां सिर्फ अंधेरा था।
हेलेन बॉलीवुड फिल्मी पर्दे पर थिरकती हुई सबका मन मोह लेती थीं। अपने चेहरे पर मुस्कान बिखेरने वाली हेलन की जिंदगी में कभी सिर्फ मायूसी थी। हेलेन का जन्म २१ नवंबर १९३८ में बर्मा में हुआ था। उनकी मां बर्मा की रहने वाली थीं। हेलेन का एक भाई और एक सौतेली बहन जेनिफर थी।
उनके पिता का देहांत होने के बाद उनकी मां ने एक ब्रिटिश सैनिक से शादी कर ली। इसके बाद हेलन ने अपने सौतेले पिता का सरनेम रिचर्डसन रख लिया। लेकिन द्वितीय वर्ल्ड वॉर में रिचर्डसन की मौत हो गई। जापान ने जब बर्मा पर कब्जा किया तो हेलन का पूरा परिवार मुंबई में आ बसा। यात्रा के वक्त उन्हें जंगलों और गांवों से गुजरना पड़ा।
हेलेन की मां और उनके दोनों भाई-बहन भूख से बिलख रहे थे। तब ग्रामीणों ने उन्हें अपने घर पर रखा और खाना दिया। वहीं पर एक ब्रिटिश सैनिक ने उन्हें मुंबई जाने के लिए गाड़ी, खाना और दवाइयां दी। इस दौरान हेलेन की प्रेग्नेंट मां का मिसकैरेज हो गया। जिस ग्रुप के साथ हेलेन का परिवार मुंबई जा रहा था। उनमें से कुछ लोग भुखमरी और कुछ बीमारी के कारण मर गए थे।
मुंबई की मंजिल अभी दूर ही थी। इसलिए हेलन की मां ने कोलकाता में रुकने फैसला किया। और उन्होंने वहां पर नर्स का काम करने कि ठानी। और नर्स का कम करने लगीं। फिर उन्होंने हेलेन और उनके दोनों भाई-बहन को स्कूल भेजा। लेकिन मां की सैलरी से घर का खर्च निकालना मुश्किल था। कोलकाता में रहते वक्त हेलेन की मां की मुलाकात कुकु मोरे से हुई जो फिल्मों में बैकग्राउंड डांसर थीं।
हेलेन घर चलाने के लिए नौकरी ढूंढ रही थीं। तब कुकु ने हेलेन को फिल्मों में कोरस डांसर की नौकरी दिला दी। हेलेन के आते ही कुकु का चार्म फीका पड़ने लगा और हेलन ने अपनी जगह बना ली। १९ साल की उम्र में हेलेन को फिल्म “हावड़ा ब्रिज” में बड़ा ब्रेक मिला। इस फिल्म के गाने “मेरा नाम चिन चिन चू” ने हेलन की किस्मत चमका दी।
उसके बाद तो वह बॉलीवुड की पहली आइटम गर्ल बनकर सामने आईं। हेलेन ६० के दशक की सेक्स सिंबल मानी जाने लगीं। हेलेन अपने डांस के साथ खूबसूरती के लिए भी जानी जाती थीं। वो जब भी घर से बाहर निकलती थीं तो बुर्का पहनती थीं। बेहद सुंदर होने की वजह से वो छेड़छाड़ का शिकार भी अक्सर होती रहती थीं।
१९५७ में हेलन ने अपने से २७ साल बड़े डायरेक्टर पीएन अरोड़ा से शादी कर ली। परन्तु ये १६ साल की शादी हेलन के ३५वें बर्थडे के दिन टूट गई। हेलेन ने पीएन अरोड़ा से इसलिए तलाक ले लिया क्योंकि वह उनके पैसे उड़ाते थे। हेलेन फिल्मों से अच्छी कमाई करती थीं। उनके पति इसी का फायदा उठाते थे। पति के खर्च के इतने बढ़ गए कि हेलेन दिवालिया हो गईं।
उनका अपार्टमेंट भी किराया ना देने कि वजह से सीज कर दिया गया। अपने पति को तलाक देने के बाद हेलन ने अकेले जिंदगी की जंग लड़ी। १९६२ में फिल्म “काबिल खान” के दौरान हेलेन की मुलाकात सलमान खान के पिता सलीम खान से हुई। सलीम खान हेलेन को देखते ही उन्हें दिल दे बैठे।
सलीम खान ने हेलेन को फिल्में दिलाने में मदद की। लेकिन वह पहले से ही शादीशुदा थे इसलिए उनकी पत्नी सुशीला ने इस पर आपत्ति जाहिर की। इसके बावजूद सलीम ने हेलन से शादी कर ली। परन्तु कुछ समय की नाराजगी के बाद सुशीला और उनके बच्चों ने हेलन को अपना लिया। और अब सलमान खान भी उन्हें मां का दर्जा देते हैं।
१९७१ में हेलेन ने अपनी मां और भाई-बहनों को हमेशा के लिए छोड़ दिया। क्योंकि उनकी मां अपने ही ड्राइवर के साथ भाग गई थीं। उनकी मां का निधन १९८६ में हो गया था। हेलेन ने १९८३ में फिल्मों से संन्यास ले लिया था। लेकिन इसके बाद भी उन्होंने कई फिल्मों में गेस्ट अपीयरेंस दिया।
हेलन को उनके भारतीय सिनेमा में योगदान के लिए पद्मश्री और फिल्मफेयर लाइफटाइम अचीवमेंट अवॉर्ड से नवाजा जा चुका है।
