इराक में उनतालीस लापता हुए भारतीयों की तलाश पर कोई सुराग नहीं मिल पाया, इस वजह से वीके सिंह ने उन लोगों को ढूंढने के मिशन को खत्म करने की घोषणा कर दी है। वीके सिंह ने मीडिया से बात करते हुए कहा कि अब सरकार को सिर्फ डीएनए सैंपल पर आश्रित रहना होगा जो उन लोगों में से कुछ के परिवार वालों से लिए गए थे।
यह भारतीय २०१४ में लापता हुए थे, उस वक्त इराक और सीरिया पर आतंकी संगठन आईएस का कब्जा था। तब से सरकार इन उनतालीस लापता हुए भारतीयों को ढूंढने की कोशिश कर रही है। सिंह उन लोगों से जुड़ी जानकारी लेने इराक के मोसुल और बदूश शहर भी जाने वाले थे जहां वह अपने पिछले दौरे पर नहीं जा पाए थे क्योंकि तब वहां आईएस का कब्जा था। लापता लोगों से जुड़ी अंतिम जानकारी वहीं से आई थी।
वीके सिंह ने बताया कि लापता भारतीयों को हर उस जगह खोजा गया जहां उनके होने का अनुमान था, परन्तु कुछ हाथ नहीं लग पाया। वीके सिंह भारत वापस आ गए हैं लेकिन इराक में मौजूद भारतीय दूतावास उन लोगों को खोजने का अभियान जारी रखेगा। आपको बता दें कि इराक के विदेश मंत्री इब्राहिम अल जाफरी जब जुलाई में भारत दौरे पर आए थे।
तब उन्होंने साफ कह दिया था कि उन ३९ भारतीयों के बारे में कोई जानकारी नहीं है कि वे जिंदा हैं या नहीं। पंजाब का एक शख्स (हरजीत) जो जून २०१४ में आईएस के चंगुल से भागकर भारत आया था उसने भी दावा किया था कि सभी ३९ भारतीयों को मार दिया गया है। अगवा ३९ भारतीयों में से ज्यादातर पंजाब के ऐसे परिवारों से हैं जिनकी आर्थिक स्थिति खराब है।
